Pianis Jazz Indonesia, Joey Alexander, Raih 2 Nominasi Grammy 2016

LOS ANGELES - Sebuah prestasi ditorehkan Joey Alexander. Di usianya yang masih belia, 12 tahun, pianis jazz Indonesia ini berhasil mendaratkan namanya sejajar dengan musisi kondang luar negeri di ajang Grammy Awards 2016. Dia juga menjadi musisi pertama asal Tanah Air yang masuk nominasi ajang bergengsi itu.

Ya, di ajang ini, Joey berhasil masuk nominasi untuk dua kategori. Pertama adalah untuk Best Jazz Instrumental Album dengan My Favorite Things. Kedua adalah untuk Best Improvised Jazz Solo dengan Giant Steps dari album yang sama.

Langkah Joey untuk bisa memenangkan penghargaan ini bisa dibilang tak mudah. Untuk kategori Best Jazz Instrumental Album, dia harus berhadapan dengan Terence Blanchard featuring The E-Collective, Robert Glasper & The Robert Glasper Trio, Jimmy Greene dan John Scofield. Sedangkan Christian McBride, Donny McCaslin dan Joshua Redman akan menjadi pesaingnya untuk kategori Best Improvised Jazz Solo.

“Jazz itu musik yang sulit. Dan, kalian harus benar-benar bekerja keras dan juga have fun saat tampil. Itu yang terpenting,” kata Joey kepada The New York Times beberapa waktu lalu.

Ditemukan di Jakarta sekitar tiga tahun lalu, Joey lalu pindah ke New York bersama orang tuanya pada 2014. Dia mulai belajar bermain jazz saat berusia 6 tahun.

Sepanjang kariernya, pianis asal Bali itu pernah tampil di hadapan orang kondang seperti Herbie Hancock dan Bill Clinton. Tahun lalu, Wynton Marsalis mengundangnya ke Jazz at Lincoln Center. The Times menyebut penampilannya di acara itu adalah “sensasi semalaman”.

Joey sendiri sudah menorehkan prestasi. Dia memenangkan Grand Prix di Master-Jam Fest 2013 dan tampil di Montreal International Jazz Festival serta Newport Jazz Festival pada 2015.

Joey juga merupakan artis pertama asal Indonesia yang menempatkan albumnya di Billboard 200. Album My Favorite Things berada di posisi 174 di pekan akhir Mei 2015.

Grammy Awards 2016 akan digelar di Staples Center, Los Angeles, pada 16 Februari mendatang. Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift dan The Weeknd mendominasi nominasi penghargaan tersebut.
